Nutricia was founded in the Netherlands in 1896 by two brothers, Jan and Martinus van der Hagen, who were inspired to start developing infant formulas by the work of Prof. Backhaus (Professor of Agriculture, Göttingen, Germany). In a time of alarmingly high infant mortality, Prof. Backhaus had succeeded in developing an infant formula that approached the composition of human milk.
In parallel, Blédina was created in 1881 as a pioneer infant cereal manufacturer. In 1906, « Blédine® » is born and saves the life of thousands of non-breastfed babies that do not grow well with infant formula only.
Today, Danone Nutricia Research continues to work from our globally recognised research and development centre in Utrecht, the Netherlands and various satellite locations.
